I had the privilege of working on this double portrait of the GORGEOUS Alfie and Reuben over the last few weeks 🎨 Creating an entire scene, working from separate photos of each pup and positioning the dogs together in a way that feels natural can present challenges that replicating a single reference image doesn’t, but this is also what makes painting portraits so rewarding. We’re able to make something exist that doesn’t already! 'Home Tree', colour study vs final painting🍃 The study was an important step in creating this piece. While I had a photo of my favourite eucalyptus tree to reference, I wanted to try and capture more than what's seen at first glance. If you've ever looked closely at a eucalyptus tree trunk, you'll know just how many colours are hidden there. And if you've ever taken a walk in a eucalyptus forest, especially when it's winter and the light is soft, you'll know just how enchanting it feels to look up and see the trunks soaring so high above, branches glowing and leaves glinting in the light ff it's like a dream, and I really wanted to capture that feeling !!✨ So in the study I played with all the shadow colours and added a sense of distance and all sorts of fun tweaks, and it really helped me hold onto my vision when it came to painting the real thing. OH and can we talk about the FRAME! I love it soooo much! Some of you might remember when I found it in an op-shop! It's second-hand, so there are a few chips and imperfections but I think they add charm. And I like that it makes the painting looks like it's been around for a long time🥹 #oilpainting #artist

Fun fact, I actually first started painting by creating my own garden scenes. I just love pretty gardens like this. Something about how the delicate nature of flowers brings me to the present; the level of nurturing that goes into them; how you can exist at once in nature but also a place carefully curated by human hands.
